The Parish Council is working with our grass cutting contractor David Granger to continue to rewild a couple of its verges in Flitton and Greenfield. The aim is to support and enhance the villages’ natural environment, encourage wildflowers to flourish and provide areas which attract bees, butterflies, birds, bats and bugs. We also hope it will be attractive and create a rural feel which makes motorists think twice about speeding through the parish.
There are two verges maintained by the Parish Council and one by a Flitton resident. The verges are by the side of footpaths in front of the allotments at Joes Close Greenfield and also by the Church Hall in Flitton. The native wild seed has been carefully chosen and purchased by the council to provide a colourful blend which will last from spring to autumn and which will make an impact. As we will be sowing in spring, some of the perennial seeds may not take in the first year and we plan to add an annual cornfield mix to make sure there is lots of bright colour and variety.
Signs have been put up on the verges to show where the flowers have been planted and they may look a bit messy to start with, we may also cordon off the planted areas and they will not be mowed as usual.
